How to Coach
I believe that coaching is the greatest profession in the world.
And by coaching, I mean leadership, helping others succeed, and building cultures that create positive change in people’s lives.
More than anything, great coaches play the long game—consistently aiming to raise the bar on meaning, impact, and legacy. The ancient prophet Isaiah said, “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of the Lord lives forever.”
Here are a few of my key thoughts on what coaches do and why it matters.
1: Coaches expect great things from you.
It doesn't matter how far you've come; what matters is how much further you can go.
2: Coaches help you set your own direction.
The journey is never about the coach; it's always about the player.
3: Coaches teach you how to chart your own course with confidence.
Dependency is never the goal; that's an ego game. Building independent, critical thinkers is the objective.
4: Coaches have total belief in your abilities.
Confidence is a force multiplier; we all could use a little encouragement from time to time.
5: Coaches sell you on the vision of becoming the best that you can be.
The biggest tragedy in life is failing to reach your potential. Those who refuse to embrace this concept at a visceral level will always struggle with mediocrity and excuses.
6: Coaches help you keep winning and losing in perspective.
Down 40 Love is a tennis metaphor for turning adversity into competitive advantage. It's also about building on success, learning from your wins, and taking your life and leadership to the next level.
